Indications and Dosage
Mouth/Throat
Mouth and throat infections, Oral hygiene
Adult: As 1% solution: Rinse or gargle 10 mL undiluted solution with an equal volume of warm water for 30 seconds 4 times daily for up to 14 days, or as directed.
Child: As 1% solution: >6 years Same as adult dose.

Ophthalmic
Prophylaxis of ocular infection following surgical procedures
Adult: As 5% solution: Instill 2-3 drops  onto affected eye(s), leave for 2 minutes then rinse off with 0.9% Na chloride solution.

Topical/Cutaneous
Acne vulgaris
Adult: As 4% solution: Apply bid directly or with moistened sponge unto affected area, leave for 3-5 minutes then rinse off with water.
Child: As 4% solution: >2 years Same as adult dose.

Topical/Cutaneous
Pyoderma, Seborrhoeic dermatitis
Adult: As 4% shampoo: Apply 2-3 capfuls in wet scalp, rinse and repeat application, lather with a warm water. Repeat procedure once weekly until desired improvement achieved.
Child: As 4% shampoo: 2-12 years Apply 1-2 capfuls in wet scalp, rinse and repeat application, lather with a warm water. Repeat procedure once weekly until desired improvement achieved. >12 years Same as adult dose.

Topical/Cutaneous
Antiseptic
Adult: As 5-10% solution, 10% gel, 10% ointment, or 10 % aerosol spray: Apply as directed.
Child: As 5-10% solution, 10% gel or 10% ointment: Same as adult dose. As 10% aerosol spray: ≥2 years Same as adult dose.

Vaginal
Vaginal irritation
Adult: As 0.3% douche: Insert 0.3% solution once daily for 5-7 days.
Incompatibility
May cause bubbly brown explosion with hydrogen peroxide solution.
Contraindications
History of abnormal thyroid function or goitre (e.g. nodular colloid goitre, endemic goitre, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis).
Special Precautions
Patient with serious wounds including burns. Renal impairment. Children. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Significant: Hypo- or hyper-thyroidism (long-term). Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions; conjunctival hyperaemia, superficial punctuate keratitis, cytotoxicity (ophth).
Dermatologic: Rarely, local irritation, pruritus, rash, oedema, burns.
Topical/Vag: D; Ophth: C
Drug Interactions
May increase risk of thyroid-related reactions with lithium. Risk of formation of caustic compounds with ophthalmic formulations containing Hg-based preservatives.
Lab Interference
May interfere with thyroid function tests. False-positive result with contaminated povidone iodine for the detection of occult blood in stool or blood in urine.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Povidone iodine is an iodophore that has a broad-spectrum germicidal activity against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and spores. It is a complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone) with iodine. After application, it gradually and continuously delivers iodine to exert its germicidal activity.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Absorbed from skin, vaginal mucosa.
Distribution: Crosses the placenta and enters breast milk.
Excretion: Mainly via urine.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light.
